A Berne-Knox-Westerlo senior has built a solid foundation for his professional future and will soon see if his skills are truly a cut above the rest. Meet Carter Iarusson.

Mr. Iarusso will graduate in June from BKW and the Capital Region BOCES Building Trades program and will then launch his own construction business – Carter’s Contracting.
“I like that in construction, you can do anything. There are no limits to the skills you can build and use and what you can do,” he said.
The Altamont-based business will specialize in home remodeling, a skill he and classmates at BOCES have put to the test while building a tiny home this year.
“I have learned a lot of different skills at BOCES I didn’t know,” he said.
Besides the traditional construction skills of framing and roofing, Building Trades students also work with the UA Local 7 Plumbers and Steamfitters union to learn plumbing skills, as well as with the Upstate Masonry Institute (UMI) and the Bricklayer & Allied Craftworkers (BAC) Local 2 Union to learn masonry.
Students are also taught the basics of business by industry experts.
“I learned a lot about business at BOCES. These are all skills I will need if I am going to be successful,” Iarusso said.
Building Trades teacher Matt Hitchock said Carter is a student that shows a lot of passion for the trade.
“With this continued mindset I feel his future business will be a success.”
Offered on the Schoharie and Albany campuses, the Building Trades program is training approximately 90 students from more than a dozen different school districts this year.
