What a season for our fellow BKW student-athletes!. From volleyball to football and golf to cross country, with a few significant highlights thrown in, this season had it all! Thank you to the coaches, parents and our student-athletes for making this a fall season to remember!!
“At BKW, athletics plays a special role in connecting our school community,” said BKW Athletic Director Tom Galvin. “For this season, we were excited to see our students compete and have fun, while bringing positive memories back into our day-to-day school year.”
With that being said, let’s get to the highlights of this year’s fall season! For this round-up, we’re kicking it off with action from the golf links:
BKW Golf Team: Congrats to BKW sophomore Owen Lounsbury for being named team MVP! Honorable mention goes to the following BKW students who participated in varsity matches during the 2022 fall season: Sophomores Justin Murphy, Matthew Cyr. Charles Tommell who competed as a freshman this year and eighth-grade students Ben West, Marshall Stevens, Johnny Meachum, Gavin Lyons and Justin Stevens who all contributed in varsity matches for BKW. In addition, the following first-year high school students participated in varsity matches: Lauren Murphy and Eric Bates. Congrats to all!
Overall, the team finished with a record of five wins and eight losses (5-8). The team placed second in the southern division and completed a strong showing at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament finishing in sixth place. Special shout-out to freshman Charles Tommell for finishing 12th out of 60 competitors in the WAC tournament. Additional recognition goes to sophomore Owen Lounsbury for being named a first team all-star and Justin Murphy being selected as a second team all-star. Rounding out the accolades is freshman Charles Tommell being named second team all-star.
Varsity Cross Country: This year’s student-athletes had a great season! Although there were only three varsity runners, they competed at the top of the league. Natalie Elble placed in the top ten for every race that she participated in this season, while improving leaps and bounds each time. She finished second in the WAC, running right around the 20 minute mark for three miles. Sophomore Owen Lounsbury started out strong, running just under 20 minutes for three miles, but sustained an injury midway. Although Owen had a knee injury mid-season, he recovered in time to have a strong end of the year performance – finishing in the low 19 minute range. Emily Sherman was named most improved athlete. She began the season in the mid-30 minutes for three miles, but got down to the 28 minute mark by the end of the season.
Modified Cross Country: BKW Mods had 12 participants for the 2022 season, five boys and seven girls. Perhaps the largest team in the league. The boys team was led by WAC Champion Joaquin Abraham, Team Captain George Wright and Top WAC seventh-grader Eric Bates. Newcomers Henry Gumper and Jordan Jones were also valued competitive team members.
Boys Varsity Football: The 2022-23 football season was highlighted by a large number of new players. The team won three consecutive games leading into their final week. For this season, the team celebrated hard-fought victories over Corinth, Rensselaer and Catskill-Cairo. A special shout out to the following seniors for a great career for HV football: Trevor Stempel, Gavin Vedder, Jeremiah Casey, CJ Mockler, Chris Davis, Jason Basle and Jacob Travis.
Girls Varsity Volleyball: This year’s team had a successful season despite numerous injuries, which forced them to restructure several times. The girls bid farewell to seniors Emma Gardiner, McKenzie Schwenk, Lucy Rappaport and Cadence Grizzard. The team finished 8-7 overall. Mckenzie Schwenk, Faith Coates, and Mackenzie Lawrence were the teams top scorers putting up the most aces, kills, assists and blocks overall. Great job!
Boys Varsity Soccer: The varsity team finished the season with an 8-3 league record and 10-6-1 record overall. This season was incredibly successful and our team claimed the Hudson Division League Championship! As a result, our team was named a five seed in sectional play! Outstanding work by all of our student-athletes.
Boys JV Soccer: This year’s team ended up 3-5-3 and outside of one lopsided loss when we were down some players, we only lost four games by a total of five goals. This team was never outworked and displayed tons of heart. Our players never quit and played to the final whistle! Four of their games went to overtime and three of them ended in a tie. The boys finished the season playing their best soccer and our district is proud of every one of them.
Boys Modified Soccer: This season’s boys modified soccer team, better known as the baby beagles, found themselves a part of a special season. The team finished with an overall record of 10-3 which is an impressive record no matter the level of competition. After falling to 1-2 after their first three games, they found their stride and won nine of their final ten games. Record aside, this merged team found themselves becoming one and acting like a family. They celebrated with each other when 10 of our 14 players scored goals this season and they played great defense. Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make sure that on the final day they were all better soccer players than when they started. Mission accomplished. For our eighth-graders that will be moving up the ranks in joining the JV team next season, they enjoyed two successful seasons, both the win column, and improving their soccer skills.
Girls Varsity Soccer: What a successful season for the program this fall. This year’s team ended the season with a 10-5-3 overall record and finished second in league play with a 6-2-2 record. They made it to the Section 2 Class C Final Four. Special recognition goes to Co-MVPs Claire Scram and Ashlee Stevens. Defender of the Year went to Katie Stevens and Goalie of the Year was Claire Curvin.
Girls’ Modified Soccer: The Modified Girls Soccer team featured a combination of BKW and Duanesburg athletes this fall. They had an amazing roster which included the following young ladies: Morgan Malpezzi, Myla Evans, Layla Cole, Holly Bremer, Eden Elble, Charlotte Elble, Ashleigh Heimberg, Samantahn Noviczski, Lana Palmer, Jayden Mosbey, Cailie Hardymon, Lilly Sisson, Sofia Bremer, Anna Matia Lefkaditis, Guenevere Evans and Abigail McGregor. As a team, they achieved a 9-3-1 record. This team was incredibly dedicated and worked hard every day at practices and games. As a result of their hard work, the team had an amazing offensive season, scoring a total of 44 goals, only allowing 12 goals to be scored by their opponents. This group of young student-athletes has an incredibly bright future! Congratulations on a fantastic season!!
