BKW Elementary School youngsters participated in the Big Apple Crunch, a national initiative sponsored by the Farm On! Foundation on Oct. 25 to encourage kids to develop healthy eating habits.
Farm On believes that education starts in the lunchroom and that students won’t perform their best if their bodies aren’t given the best fuel. By teaching kids the importance of eating nutrient-dense whole foods from local farms, they will learn to make healthier food choices and grow up to become healthy, food-literate adults.
That healthy fuel in October is apples … big, juicy, crunchy apples supplied by the FFA to BKW Pre-K and Kindergarten students. FFA is the premier youth organization preparing members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.
BKW high school student and current FFA member Graycie Swain and BKW 2919 graduate and former FFA member Kayleigh Reynolds-Flynn read a book about apples to the Pre-K and Kindergartners then passed out real apples to the classes. Then 1! 2! 3! they all bit their apples at the same time creating the BKW Big Apple Crunch!
Schools were challenged to post their “big crunch” photos and video clips on social media for a chance to win $1,000 for a FarmOn! Victory Garden at their school. Winners will be announced November 8.
