READBowl kicks off at BKW Elementary School!

There’s no need to travel to New Orleans for this year’s Super Bowl. We have our own Super Bowl right here at BKW! Over the next month, a friendly reading competition will take place between third and fourth-grade classrooms. Appropriately called the ‘READBowl,’ it has third and fourth-grade classrooms logging their time reading to gain points and win fun prizes while learning about the importance of literacy.

READBowl is a FREE global reading competition where PreK-12th grade aged teams around the globe compete to read for the most minutes. The competition begins the week before the American College Football National Championship (2nd Monday in January). It culminates with a live crowning of the World Champions of Reading on the morning of the National Football League’s (NFL) Super Bowl Sunday. As you can see, it’s a big deal and the students are responding in a big way and having all the fun that comes with reading!

Founded by former National Football League and New England Patriots receiver Malcolm Mitchell, the program is a platform to allow students to get involved in reading amongst some friendly competition with classmates. Each day, the students in the third and fourth-grade classrooms will have periods set aside for independent reading and students are responsible for tracking their time. At the end of each day, a bulletin board in the form of a football field is updated with football helmets marking each participating classroom. It’s a great way for students to track their progress and see how they are doing against their friends.

“Reading is such an important part of our student’s learning, whether in the classroom or at home,” said BKW Elementary School fourth grade teacher Mrs. Alyssa Smith. “The READBowl allows schools to strengthen that opportunity and prepare our students for a lifelong journey to be successful each day in the classroom. It’s a great way to build excitement, and we look forward to seeing how our students build their love for reading.”
