On Tuesday, May 20, Berne-Knox-Westerlo district residents approved the district’s $21.9 million spending plan for the 2014-15 school year. A total of 667 people cast a ballot, with 443 voting "yes" and 224 voting "no."
The $21,921,272 budget carries a tax levy increase of zero percent, which is below the district’s “maximum allowable tax levy” of 3.02 percent under the state’s Tax Levy Limit legislation. Overall spending in the budget increased by 1.8 percent over the current year's budget.
In order to offset the local tax levy, the district is using $1,207,896 from the fund balance. There will some cuts to non-academic areas of the BKW program, and numerous additions to the academic program. For additional details on these reductions and additions, please click here.
Also on the ballot
Residents also passed the purchase of four new buses at a total cost of $230,500, with 465 yes votes and 201 no votes. The proposition includes the sale of four of the older buses in the district's fleet. You can read more about this proposition here.
Elected to serve three-year terms on the Board of Education beginning July 1, 2014 were Russell Chauvot with 477 votes and Vasilios Lefkaditis with 406 votes.
