Please take a moment to read news from Superintendent Dr. Paul Dorward regarding upcoming changes to the funding of the BKW Pre-Kindergarten program. Any questions should be directed to the Superintendent's Office at 872-1293.
I would like to take a moment of your time to address some recent news and a subsequent rumor that has arisen. Starting next year, the Pre-K program at BKW will be funded a little differently than it has been since its inception. This news has sparked a rumor that our Pre-K program will be cut. This is not the case. The district has every intention of retaining our Pre-K program and is considering many options to fund it.
The BKW Pre-K program began in our 2007-08 school year and has been funded by a Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) grant in conjunction with additional funding from Head Start. This year, due to Sequestration, Head Start will be losing the funding that it contributes to the BKW Pre-K program. The district, however, still retains the funding from the UPK grant.
We are currently working with Albany County Action Partnership (ACAP) Head Start to outline our options for continuing to fund and offer the Pre-K program at BKW. I am confident that even without any additional funding, the Pre-K program will continue to be offered to our residents.
We appreciate any efforts that have been made by parents to reach out to our local legislators to express their discontent with the cut funding from Head Start. This letter is to simply assure you that the district is working to retain the Pre-K program as close to its current form as we can.
If you have any questions, please reach me at the Superintendent’s Office, (518) 872-1293, and I will do my best to provide as much clarity as we have at this moment. As soon as we have any additional information, we will communicate it to you.
Dr. Paul Dorward
