On Thursday, March 28, the Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy, along with other members of the Albany County Legislature, visited BKW and honored students involved in BKW athletic programs.
As part of a visiting tour called the "Week of Champions", McCoy visited some of the Capital District talent that has long been known as some of the best high school talent in the state. With visits to Albany High, Watervliet and Bethlehem, BKW was the County Executive's last stop on the tour, in which the goal was to honor those athletes whose accomplishments merit recognition for sportsmanship, achievement and excellence.
In the ceremony, McCoy honored the BKW girls basketball team, including all-time scoring record breaker Liz Harvey, the BKW boy's basketball all-time scoring record breaker Garrett Pitcher and wrestling champion Joe Sprung. In attendance was also Garrett Pitcher's grandfather, Ted Pitcher, who had the standing basketball scoring record for the district until Garrett surpassed it this spring.
Daniel P. McCoy writes:
"The latest stop on the “Week of Champions” tour was Berne-Knox-Westerlo, where I spent some time with the school’s basketball team and all-time scoring leaders Liz Harvey and Garrett Pitcher. The girls’ team and their coach Tom Galvin had a great season this year and deserve a lot of credit for all their efforts on and off the court.
I want to thank principal Brian Corey, Superintendent Dr. Paul Dorward and Coach Galvin for hosting us today. All too often we hear about when youngsters get in trouble or make poor choices. I wanted to recognize the good things kids can do if they work together. I also want to congratulate Garrett Pitcher for setting the school scoring mark with 1,063 points. The record is a family affair and was once held by his grandfather, Ted Pitcher.
I also want to congratulate Section II wrestling champion Joe Sprung and coach Jeff Vogel. With a record of 32-1, Joe dominated his weight class and set a school record for wins with 112. Congratulations to you for your hard work and accomplishments. Your commitment to excellence is outstanding."
